Magnitude: | 12.2 mag | |
Constellation: | Cnc | |
Distance: | 2,000 Ly | |
Notes: | Abell 31, also named Sh2-290 is an ancient planetary nebula in constellation Cancer. Its distance is estimated to be about 2,000 light years. Because of the large size (16 arc-min) the surface brightness is very low. The southern portion of this planetary nebula is bounded by a wide "bow shock" where the nebular material is apparently interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium. | |
